The new Red Door in Lake Ann

Historically, a red door on the front of a building has meant many different things. From welcoming visitors to signifying status. A red door has even signified a safe house in the underground railroad in the time of the U.S. Civil War.

In my research, I found a site with a nice summary of the variety of meanings from over the years. According to American Red Door, in early American tradition, a red door became a symbol to weary horse and buggy travelers that a home was a safe place to rest.

Have you seen the new red door in downtown LA?

In downtown Lake Ann.  In Michigan, that is.

And what this particular red door represents is a good cup of coffee and a cool place to hang out. (You’ll have to leave your horse and buggy outside though.) Right next to the Almira Township Hall, and across from the Lake Ann Post Office, you’ll find it.

You’ll begin to relax as soon as you pass through that red door.  The welcoming eclectic decor is highlighted by the corrugated steel ceiling original to the building (when it was the village fire house). The walls are covered with work by local artists that are available to purchase.  There are cozy sitting areas as well as dining tables. It would be a great place to bring your laptop and get some work done. All in all, The Red Door Coffee House is a good representation of the best of northern Michigan.

The business was opened in 2014 by long time Lake Ann residents and entrepreneurs, Gary and Lori Florip and their daughter and son-in-law, Greta and Travis Kemp. They also have an office on-site for their real estate business, Lakeview Realty.  So if you’re in the market for a new house, or looking for someone to manage your property, they can help you with that too.

At any given time, you’ll find a circle of local residents gathered around. The shop filled a gap in the village where the residents can now come together for a cup of coffee. Or a latte, or a mocha or a cup of tea.

Red Door Specialty Flavors

Whatever you choose from their menu, the ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible. They use Higher Grounds coffee. Grocer’s Daughter chocolate in their mocha’s, Shetler Dairy in their Lattes, and Light of Day teas.

The bagels, scones and muffins are baked fresh in Traverse City at Biga Better Bagels. When you order a panini, it is made to order using Stone House Bread and even served with local Great Lakes Potato Chips.

This morning, my husband and I shared a bagel breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and bacon on a toasted onion bagel. It was delicious. And I must say, very affordable at three dollars and fifty cents. It’s hard to find breakfast in the Traverse City area for under five bucks!

And then, of course, there’s the coffee. That’s what we’re here for anyway, right? The coffee is perfectly brewed. They have an assortment of mugs you can choose to use when you’re dining in. I love picking my own mug at a coffee house. Don’t you? I was in a green mood today.

Children’s Play Area

Those who have little ones with them will be glad to know that The Red Door is family friendly. They have set aside a play area complete with children’s books and a collection of toys just inviting kids in.

It’s great to have the children entertained and happy so the adults can have a moment to enjoy their coffee. What I would’ve given to find a place like this when my kids where younger!

As it is, I am happy to have found it even now. My kids love it still, even though they are too big for the children’s area. They do enjoy the Bananagrams that are (thoughtfully) placed in a basket on the table. 😉

I suggest you leave your review in Bananagrams on the table at The Red Door when you come to visit. 🙂
